The Opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Bioinformatician to become a part of Prof Phil Jones' team on a full-time, fixed-term contract for 3 years. This position will engage you in the cutting-edge world of next-generation sequencing technologies, where you will manage pipelines and analyse data from projects such as a new 3D culture epithelial system. In the process of analysis augmenting our comprehension of clonal competition within epithelial tissues.

About the Team:

The Jones lab are world-leaders in studying how oncogenic mutants spread through normal tissues in the earliest stages of cancer development with pioneering studies on how such mutations alter stem cell behaviour.

Our approach involves working in a multidisciplinary and collaborative manner. Our team consists of wet-lab experimental scientists, data scientists, bioinformaticians, and computational biologists who work closely together to generate and analyse a variety of biological datasets. These datasets range from DNA/RNA sequencing and CRISPR screens to duplex and single-cell Perturb-Seq.

Our combined expertise in sequencing, advanced 3D cell cultures and CRISPR based gene-editing puts us in the ideal position to develop novel interventions to prevent cancer.

About the Role:

As part of the team you will be involved in data analysis of a diverse array of high-throughput genomic data. You will work closely with wet lab scientists to interpret the data and help design future experiments. You will be working with senior bioinformaticians and will be trained on using current best bioinformatics software practices, pipelines centred around containerisation and workflow management.

About you:

You will have experience in bioinformatics, software development or computer science. You should be an excellent communicator and be able to articulate your ideas/ findings clearly to people at all levels. Applicants should have a proven track record of innovation and productivity, be a very collaborative team player, have excellent organizational skills, and strong verbal and written communications skills.

Essential Skills:
  • Undergraduate qualification, or equivalent working experience, in Bioinformatics, Software development, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • Demonstrable knowledge of a scripting language such as Python, R
  • Demonstrable understanding in the fields of genomics, data processing and high-throughput data analysis
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively (verbal and written) with all levels of management & staff
  • Enthusiastic, flexible and proactive

Ideal Skills:
  • Familiarity with software version control such as GIT and Docker/ Singularity containerisation
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix environment and shell scripting
